Your Guide to Preventing Dog Bites and Knowing What to Do if One Happens
Dog bites are a common emergency we see here in Palm Coast, and they’re rarely predictable. A quick moment at the dog park or an unexpected reaction during a walk can lead to an injury that needs medical attention.
While our main hospital is under development, our mobile emergency unit is ready to help during evenings and weekends. We’re here to guide you through the steps of prevention, care, and recovery.
Read the Room: Watch for Dog Body Language
Some dogs may look friendly but are signaling discomfort. Learn to spot the signs of stress in other dogs:
- Freezing or tense body posture
- Growling, raised hackles, or stiff tail
- Lip licking or yawning
- Turning away or trying to leave
- Staring or showing the whites of their eyes
And don’t forget—your own dog may be giving signs too. Pay attention to their mood and energy in new or busy situations.
Dog Park Dos and Don’ts
While dog parks can be great social outlets, they’re not ideal for every dog. Some dogs get overwhelmed, some may not be trained well, and others might simply not enjoy group play.
There’s no shame in skipping the park if it doesn’t suit your dog. Their safety and happiness come first.
Vaccination Reminders
If your dog is bitten or bites another animal, being up to date on rabies vaccination is crucial. It not only protects their health but also avoids unnecessary quarantine or legal complications.
